Those of you who prefer to have variety within their music collections, here’s seven tracks that hopefully will get you through the next week.
Carry Me - Bombay Bicycle Club
It has been a while since we’ve heard from Bombay Bicycle Club so we can all breathe a sigh of relief with their latest release, Carry Me. Another change of stylistic direction for the band, Carry Me is brilliantly rhythmic and undoubtedly catchy. Despite some parts being slightly repetitive, this new track will stick in your head and ensure you’re singing it throughout the week. It goes without saying that the video accompanying this track is incredible. It’s interactive, check it out here. Yep! That means you control the stop motions of the dancers and band in the video. So if you’re trying to put off that assignment, here’s where to do so. It’s a win-win situation!
Girl Is On My Mind - The Black Keys
From their 2004 album, Rubber Factory, this song features dominating and gritty guitar riffs. This is accompanied by relatively simplistic lyrics, which give the track a somewhat sleazy yet charming feel - how contradictory eh? The Black Keys resonate a loud-quiet feel throughout and effortlessly execute their distinct blues-rock sound once again.
Rhiannon - Fleetwood Mac
From new releases to old classics (and by classic I mean, this band and this song; something we rarely see in today’s chart music). There is a huge history behind Fleetwood Mac, which would easily be another article in itself. Or book. With multiple volumes. So in short.. with Stevie Nicks joining Fleetwood Mac in the 70’s, the band’s sound had completely changed for the better. Nicks’ stunning vocals really push ‘Rhiannon’ into the iconic song category. Fleetwood Mac have an enormous back catalogue of beautiful records but this song in particular remains one of my favourites. Their sound is simply timeless.
Moth Wings - Pond
The psychedelic Australian band experiment with bouncing riffs, a range of echoing harmonies and generally everything great. The song is pretty much a musical acid trip. This is definitely a great thing. The line up of Pond seems to be constantly changing, featuring members of Tame Impala, but no, this is not a side project and this track proves that the band have true potential. Moth Wings comes from the album Beards Wives Denim and is not a track for when you’re trying to chill out. There is a lot going on here but Pond just pull it off perfectly.
You’re The One For Me - Great Good Fine Ok
This electro-pop track from the Brooklyn-based artist is just a little bit addictive. The track just echoes that chilled summer festival feel, which is a pleasant change from the dark, rainy nights of November. When doing a little research into Great Good Fine Ok - after unintentionally stumbling across this track over the Internet - there seems to be a lack of background information around this producer. Mysterious.
Oblivion - Grimes
Grimes’ eerily childish voice floats around on this song. Her distinct and generally kind of weird, lo-fi dance sound makes her a favourite with the hipsters and bloggers world wide. Oblivion, a track on Grime’s 2012 record Visions is a song I will never get bored of. Grimes isn’t afraid to speak her mind either and showing she has more substance than many other female artists. You can find her often posting on her blog confronting social issues, recently expressing her opinion on being female in the music industry right now.
Arabella - Arctic Monkeys
This is a perfect way end to this list. Personally, I feel that it would be criminal not to include an Arctic Monkeys’ track here. No matter whether you’re a fan or not, one cannot ignore the hype around their new album AM (unless you live under a rock that is). Arctic Monkeys’ frontman, Alex Turner, has said that in terms of lyrics, Arabella is the best song he has written to date. I could probably continue into why this song and this band are amazing, but I’ll let you hear for yourselves.

I wonder if people ever understand that one song can literally make or break your day, you could be having the worst day ever and then one familiar song comes on and changes that.
Peyton Sawyer, the One Tree Hill character seemed to live by that philosophy. I like this, love the title. 🙂

Hey Josh, yeah I understand exactly what you mean! I definitely have a few favourite songs which are uplifting!
Glad you liked the article, thinking of making this a regular!

Great article… and great songs 🙂

Continue to be educated by Miss Crowcombe in the world of music! I shall get listening my friend! But most definitely agreed on the Arctic Monkeys front!
